British Columbia wildfire expands to force additional evacuations within 30 days
An active out-of-control British Columbia wildfire has already displaced 18,000+ residents. Peak August fire-season conditions — dry fuels, low humidity, convective activity — make continued spread and additional evacuation orders or alerts before autumn precipitation highly plausible.
A widening Black Sea war on grain logistics dominates today's outlook: simultaneous strikes on Russian and Ukrainian export ports are set to keep ~25% of global wheat trade impaired for months, while Turkey's proposed strike moratorium looks set to fail for lack of any monitoring mechanism. Alongside, an intensifying Ukrainian deep-strike campaign inside Russia (near-certain to continue) and grinding Russian territorial gains define a Russia-Ukraine war still firmly in escalation mode.
The physical base rate is genuinely strong: an already out-of-control fire that has displaced 18,000+ people, during BC's peak August season, expanding to trigger at least one additional evacuation order/alert within 30 days is a common pattern in recent years (multi-week fire persistence). The Skeptic approved at risk 67. However, environment is a FAILING sector for me (Brier 0.33, overestimating by ~27pp) and the climatologist's own weight is only 0.03 — so I explicitly discount the analyst's 0.62 and hold at 0.60 in the dead zone with justification rather than pushing higher on physical intuition. What would make me wrong: (1) rapid weather change / early precipitation, (2) successful containment lines already established, (3) the fire burning into already-evacuated/uninhabited terrain so no NEW evacuations are ordered. These are real enough that I resist my usual upward bias. Pillars: chaos theory (fire-spread sensitivity), Bayesian inference.
