An Iranian or Iran-directed attack kills a serving US government official or diplomat by December 24, 2026
US intelligence (DNI reporting, CNN, NYT) says Iran is in 'advanced stages' of plotting to assassinate US officials. An unclassified memo has gone out and diplomats' families have been evacuated from parts of the Middle East. This forecast resolves yes if a US civilian official or diplomat is killed in an attack that the US government attributes to Iran or forces it directs within 60 days.
Elections and their aftermath lead today's outlook. Israel faces long coalition talks after the October 27 vote, and Serbia's contest between Vucic and the student movement is likely to bring large new protests in Belgrade. Meanwhile, Ukraine's deep strikes on Russian energy sites look set to continue, and Iranian assassination threats keep the risk to US officials elevated, though it remains low.
The geopolitician framed this negatively at 0.73 for no attack. The affirmative version is about 0.27, which I think is too high. Iran has run assassination plots against US officials for years (against Bolton, Pompeo and others) with essentially no lethal success. US counterintelligence, the evacuations and hardened posture after the warning all make an attack harder. On the other side, this is open war: the US-Israel campaign against Iran, read as real escalation at 0.88 purity, and the reported killing of Khamenei give Tehran a strong motive for revenge, and the US now treats the threat as operational rather than theoretical. Proxy attacks in Iraq, Syria or the Gulf on embassies and convoys are the most likely route to a yes. I count only civilian officials and diplomats, not troops in combat, to keep resolution clear. Weighing a low historical base rate against wartime motive and a public warning, I get 0.13. I am slightly underconfident in geopolitics on average (by about 6 points), but the historical success rate of these plots keeps this low.
